Standards and Expectation
As a student in post-16 education at Nunthorpe Academy Sixth Form, our expectations are as follows:
- Attend all lessons, tutorials, and supervised study lessons.
- Arrive at all lessons and tutorials on time and fully equipped. This includes a folder for each subject being studied, that is kept in an orderly manner for inspection at any time.
- Work to the highest standard at all times (lessons, independent and supervised study) and complete work set by the given deadline. Understand that progress to Y13 should not be presumed to be automatic and is subject to successful completion of Y12 based on having a good attitude to learning and good attendance above 96%.
- Respect the right of other students to learn in lessons and when using other sixth form facilities.
- Behave in a mature and responsible manner, recognising that Sixth form students are a role model for those in Years 7 to 11.
- Recognise that poor attendance (less than 90%) and poor behaviour could result in students paying towards their own exams as well as weekly bursary being affected and driving lesson funding may also be declined.
- Arrive on the sixth form site by 8.25am ready to go into tutorial time. Students are allowed to leave only if they have no subject sessions, supervised study sessions or tutorial. If students have an independent study time identified on their Timetable, then they may work off site during this time. NOTE: Independent study periods can be enforced as being on site. For example, if progress is not in line with expected targets. This will be scrutinised on an individual basis.
- Accept that once enrolled, students will not enrol with a different provider unless they have provided evidence of being accepted at that alternative placement.
- Lanyards will be worn at all times while on Nunthorpe Academy site.
- Fobs will be used at all times when signing in and out of Nunthorpe site (even if the gates are open).
- Remember that when off site during school hours, students are representing the academy and to conduct themselves in a safe and sensible way.
- Understand and accept that attendance below 96% may affect access to academy privileges, rewards and incentives.
- Recognise that working (e.g. part time job) for more than 8 hours per week may have an impact on the time that can be devoted to academic studies and potential results.
- Dress in an appropriate manner conducive to a working, business environment, as guided by the Sixth Form leadership team.
- Keep mobile phones out of use during lessons unless given teacher permission to use it. Behavioral issues have consequences such as removal of independent study time at home.
- Read, understand and comply with the Academy Acceptable User Policy (AUP).
- Agree to follow the academy policies on Behaviour, Punctuality and Attendance.
- Accept that failure to abide by this Learning Agreement may result in the Sixth Form implementing Disciplinary Procedures.
We ask parents/carers to:
- Support their son/daughter through two demanding years of education, attending meetings about their progress whenever possible, including yearly Parental Review Evenings.
- Maintain full parental responsibility whilst their son/daughter remains in full time education, even beyond reaching the age of 18, until course completion.
- Support the sixth form through the implementation of the Learning Agreement
- Notify the Academy of any absences by telephone (01642 310561) by 8.00 am each day of absence.
- Refrain from booking any holidays in term time – these will not be authorised.
- Support the Academy in promoting high attendance and understand that we will be in contact to clarify reasons and notify of issues.
- Understand and accept that attendance below 96% may affect student references.
- Pay for all exams if attendance is less than 90%, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
- Understand and accept that students will be allowed off site during the day and in certain circumstances.
- Understand that students not abiding by our expectations will lead to privileges being revoked.
- Communicate any concerns or issues they might have as soon as possible by contacting the Head of Sixth Form. Subject specific concerns should be directed to subject teachers and tutors made aware of this contact.
- Attend all Parental Review Evenings or arrange an alternative mutually convenient time, to be arranged via their son/daughter's tutor.
As a Sixth Form, we will:
- Provide students with well planned, interesting and challenging lessons.
- Set work regularly, mark and return it promptly providing guidance on how students can improve with the expectation that areas for improvement will be addressed.
- Ensure that appropriate work is set if a teacher is absent.
- Ensure that students and their parents/carers receive regular information on the progress being made.
- Implement intervention strategies to support students who are not making satisfactory progress and communicate this home.
- Provide a pastoral programme that addresses a range of spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues alongside fundamental British Values.
- Provide students with the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular and enrichment activities.
Lesson Times
Lesson times at sixth form are the same as for the academy and although, at times, students will not be in academic lessons for the whole day, they will be expected to be in the sixth form building from 8.30am for tutorial and then for all subject sessions and supervised study sessions. Students are encouraged to study during independent study sessions in the Sixth Form whereby they can access resources, and staff are likely to be on hand for support. The building is open for students from 8am – 4.30pm Monday –Thursday and 8am-4pm on Fridays.
